adjective

able to be used for a practical purpose or in several ways*

I am a maker of objects. Utilizing data as a raw material I make meaningful forms with both an aesthetic allure and intellectual intrigue. Through an innovative creative workflow which I call data materialization, I work through custom computer scripts, multiple software packages, and traditional craft techniques such as metalsmithing and casting to create objects that are conceptually connected by design and material. Many of the works in this exhibition were created in collaboration with others who are given credit on the labels or for specific exhibitions, as noted in the descriptions.

Data materialization embeds conceptually relevant data in the designs with the primary objective to attract and inspire rather than clearly present the data. Concepts explored in this exhibition are social themes such as labor, diversity, gender balance, self-image, and politics. Data related to these themes are collected and curated, through custom scripts converted into drawings and patterns from which I produce both two- dimensional shapes and three-dimensional forms that are 3D printed, laser cut, computationally machined, waterjet cut, cast, forged, and stitched. Through an interactive design process, I reuse the patterns in multiple ways, resulting in tangible, tactile and meaningful objects and prints. The works in this exhibition highlight my iterative creative process spanning a decade.
