2003-2005 In this body of work I focus on the relationships and interactions between organisms. I am especially intrigued by anomalies and reversals in the food chain. By using the human body as host, I create parasite and plant referenced forms that feed upon the personality of the host. The objects I create live directly on the human body; I want to establish the illusion of the piece grabbing, sucking, or squeezing onto a part of the host. With a piece attached to the body, the personality of the piece overtakes the wearer’s personality. My work is abstractly consuming the human body to which it has been attached. Humans are extremely complex in comparison to other life forms. The ability to question and doubt is unique to us. Our physical bodies and emotional minds are interconnected, each having a direct effect on the other. The objects that I create have a presence on the body and will directly affect the emotions of the wearer. The identity of the wearer becomes subservient to the piece, while the piece is dependent on the human body in order to serve its purpose. In this body of work I am utilizing materials and forms that share characteristics with the organisms from which I draw my inspiration. My intention is to design objects of visual and tactile interest that create an unconventional relationship with the wearer, residing directly on the body. |
